Case Study: DRUTHERS.ca

We are extemely proud and honoured to be working with DRUTHERS  News and Information.  This client came in with a plethora of tasks to complete.

First, we did a total overhaul of the site theme, starting from scratch with a more robust and customizable template.  More than three years of previously published content was carefully imported from PDF files into actual posts which users can read and share on social media.  Of course, these posts were carefully and methodically tagged and categorized to facilitate improved readership.

Next, we fixed e-mail deliverability issues by integrating an SMTP server for sending e-mail with the correct headers required by extra-choosy mail clients (such as Outlook and MSN Hotmail,) and integrated the code provided by their third-party newsletter service in a much more visually appealing manner.

Then came the database – a whopping 1.5 gigabytes!  Investigations revealed that a plugin they relied on was filling the database with junk data – over 700 megabytes of it (that’s about half of the entire database.)  Similar defects were identified in other plugins they were using, so we worked very carefully with the plugin authors to have fixes implemented for all of these bugs.

As for images, each of the 700+ articles were accompanied by a featured image.  Our nerdy command-line tools compressed these files to about one hundredth of their original file size, still looking nice and crisp – much faster load times for these very important pages.

Last but not least, we had a MASSIVE export/import process consisting of 35,000 orders as well as associated Users, Products and Subscriptions.  The subscriptions were created using a very bad plugin which was incompatible with WooCommerce, and therefore we had to write custom PHP code to traverse and analyze their database as a means of generating CSV files in the proper format expected by the WooCommerce import/export tools.

We’re talking next-to-impossible with the import/export, but it got done – all of their previous store data is now safely contained in the proper database format for WooCommerce integration, and running smoothly.

So what can we do for you?  Close to anything!
